Woman’s Own, IPC Connect’s weekly magazine for consumers who want expert advice, inspiration and value, today celebrates its 80th birthday with a special commemorative issue.
Launched in 1932, Woman’s Own has been a firm favourite of the UK newsstand with stars including Margaret Thatcher and Madonna gracing the cover. To celebrate the birthday, the first edition of Woman’s Own will be available as a digital magazine to view at www.womansown.co.uk. Readers can also browse galleries of the best Woman’s Own covers from the past 80 years.
Content in the 72 page birthday issue includes an exclusive interview with Barbara Taylor Bradford, who worked at Woman’s Own and a feature celebrating the life of Joan Collins – who also celebrates her 80th Birthday this year – in pictures. Other features include beauty heroes of the last 80 years, a nostalgic look back at a 1930’s diet, a feature about three generations of Woman’s Own readers and a bespoke Woman’s Own birthday cake.
To drive awareness of the birthday, the brand worked with photographer Alison Jackson to create a spoof picture of The Queen, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge all reading Woman’s Own under hood dryers at the hairdressers. Readers will be asked to send in photos of unusual places where they read their copy of the magazine to www.womansown.co.uk and readers will vote for an overall winner who receives a cash prize. Behind the scenes video footage of the Alison Jackson shoot will be available on the website too.
Editor Catherine Westwood, who joined Woman’s Own in April, says: “There has never been a more exciting time to work for Woman’s Own. Our heritage means so much to our readers, but they love that fact that we already move with the times to reflect their lives.”
Roger Cummings, publishing director, Woman’s Own adds: “Woman’s Own has been on an incredible journey over the last two months. In this time, the brand has re-launched the magazine, developed a standalone website and launched an optimised mobile site. And now it celebrates its 80th birthday. To toast its heritage in such a modern, forward-thinking way, the birthday issue and digital extensions epitomise everything that the loyal, Woman’s Own audience stand for. They are passionate about getting the best out of life, love to celebrate and most importantly, know how to have fun with friends and family”.
