KASABIAN, ARCTIC MONKEYS & MUSE DOMINATE THIS YEAR'S SHOCKWAVES NME AWARDS NOMINATIONS
After a year of the girls ruling the music scene, the boys look set to fight back in a night of great music and bad behaviour at this year's explosive Shockwaves NME Awards. A staggering 1.3million votes have been cast as music fans have their say on who they think are worthy winners of the prestigious awards.
The votes are counted and it's Arctic Monkeys who lead the charge with an impressive six nominations. Kasabian are hot on their heels with five nominations while Muse clock up four.
Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys have a huge battle on their hands as they go head-to-head in five categories Best British Band, Best Live band, Best Album, Best Video and a new category for 2010, the Giving It Back Award recognising bands amazing acts of generosity towards their fans.
Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys said: It's a good thing knowing we're still up for these awards Kasabian have said that there aren't any other proper rock bands apart from us and them. I don't necessarily agree completely but I know what they're saying. I think we're just co-existing nicely.
Despite disappointing fans by splitting up in 2009, Oasis have racked up three nominations for Best Video, Best Live Event and Best British Band where they join old touring partners Kasabian. Will this be the year that Kasabian take over from Oasis as the best rock n roll band in Britain?
Krissi Murison, Editor, NME takes the helm for the first time at this year's awards and is set to take the awards into the new decade in true NME style: The NME awards is the one ceremony where you see the bands who have really meant something and made a difference get justly rewarded. So alongside deserving big names like Muse and Arctic Monkeys, there's also younger, influential artists like The Horrors and The Big Pink -and the great thing is, there's no predicting which way the fans will vote!
Joining Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian and Oasis in the battle for the title of Best British Band are Biffy Clyro and Muse. This category is packed full with outstanding talent and is sure to be one of the biggest stories of the night.
Fighting it out for the Best Live Event title are Blur, Jay-Z, Muse, Oasis and The Dead Weather who have all wowed audiences in 2009. After a triumphant return, will Blur triumph again here?
The NME Awards provide the final, definitive word on new music, and the Best New Band category is the year's most accurate predictor of THE next big thing. The new decade gets off to an excellent start for The Big Pink as fans nominate them in Best New Band and Best Track categories. Taking to the road with the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour from February 4, the band look set to make a huge impact in 2010.
Joining them in the nominations for Best New Band, one of the most highly coveted awards in music, are fellow NME Awards Tour band Bombay Bicycle Club, folksters Mumford & Sons, London trio The xx and chart toppers La Roux.
The girls have their own battle on their hands as Florence And The Machine goes head to head with Lady Gaga in the Best Solo Artist and Best Dancefloor Filler categories. These ladies have ruled the music scene for the past 12 months but which will emerge victorious on the night?
With British bands sweeping the board in almost every other category, Green Day, Kings Of Leon, Paramore, Vampire Weekend and Yeah Yeah Yeahs are all competing for the title of Best International Band. After selling out shows across the world, it is still to be seen which band will add a Shockwaves NME Award to their accolades.
With bands and fans getting closer than ever before thanks to social networking, fanclubs and special releases, NME has decided for the first time to reward the acts that go the extra mile and really look after fans. Nominees in the brand new Giving It Back Award, include Lily Allen who staged treasure hunts all over the globe so lucky punters who found the tickets could get into her world tour for free, Kasabian who teamed up with The Mighty Boosh's Noel Fielding to make a special one off video that was given away free via their website, Arctic Monkeys who produced special versions of their singles to sell through Oxfam complete with a limited number of hidden Golden Tickets to their UK tour and Vampire Weekend who gave away the opening track to their brand new hit album 'Contra' completely for free.
The winners will be announced at the Shockwaves NME Awards on February 24, 2010 at the legendary O2 Academy Brixton. The awards will be packed with the who's who of the music world, with performances from the biggest and best acts of the last 12 months.
