Nuts publishing director Jo Smalley has walked away with the accolade for Publisher of the Year (Consumer Magazines) at the annual magazine 'Oscars', the Periodical Publishers Association Editorial and Publishing Excellence Awards.
The Awards, judged by a panel of industry experts, reward the very highest calibre of talent and achievement across magazine publishing in the UK, and were hosted at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Wednesday, May 9.
Jo picked up the award despite stiff competition from the cream of British publishers, including Kathy Day from Radio Times, Stuart Williams of Kerrang!, publishing director of Pick Me Up Sandy Gale, and Wallpaper* publishing director Fiona Dent.
Citing Jo's “obvious amounts of personal energy and passion,” the judges applauded his contribution to propelling Nuts into a “power brand”.
The judges said: “Communicating to readers through print, online, mobile, live events and now the UK's most popular pub machine game, the amazing array of brand extensions impressed the panel. Having only just celebrated its third birthday, Nuts has already become much more than just a magazine – today it is one of the best known brands in Britain."
They added: “Steering the domination of the market to extraordinary levels, Jo Smalley instinctively knows the market more than anyone else.”
After receiving his award, Jo said: "I'm overawed, and so pleased that they recognised Nuts. This award is all about the magazine as a brand and about the team as a whole."
Ignite managing director Eric Fuller adds: "Jo is a brilliant publisher who has worked tirelessly to extend Nuts' reach across all our publishing platforms. I can't imagine a more worthy winner."
