CONOR MCNICHOLAS STANDING DOWN AS EDITOR OF NME

June 24, 2009

After seven years as editor of NME, one of the UK's most iconic magazines, Conor McNicholas is to step down from the role later this year.

Taking the helm of NME in June 2002, Conor has led the editorial team to an array of awards for the brand and played a key role in the brand's development across a range of platforms.

Conor says: “It's been a huge privilege to edit the NME and be part of such an iconic brand that has continued to shape the future of magazine publishing. I want to thank everyone who has made these years such an exciting ride and the best of my life.”

NME publishing director Paul Cheal says: “Conor has made a great contribution to the ongoing development of the NME. Over the last seven years he and his talented team have garnered plaudits and awards in equal measure, consistently creating the most innovative and compelling new music magazine on the newsstand today. We wish him all the very best after he leaves us.

“Meanwhile, for Conor and the team, it's business as usual, while I focus on recruiting for one of the biggest jobs in magazine journalism.”

Under Conor's editorship, NME has won a string of awards. In 2005 Conor was named as BSME Editor of the Year in the Entertainment Magazines category – his second major industry award of the year after being named PPA Consumer Editor of the Year. NME.COM has picked up a slew of awards, including Best Music Magazine in the BT Digital Music Awards and Best Digital Publication at the Record of the Day Awards.

Last year NME won the coveted PPA Consumer Media Brand of the Year award. The judges were impressed with NME's approach to brand development, “setting the template for how a modern magazine brand can extend its reach and influence in a variety of ways and across a variety of mediums”.

Conor is currently chair of the British Society of Magazine Editors.

NME continues to drive the new music agenda across all its platforms, including NME Radio and NME TV. The 2009 NME Awards, in February, were the most successful ever, NME Radio announced its arrival on DAB in London in May and today the NME brand, across all platforms, reaches over one million people ever week.

An announcement will be made about Conor's successor in due course.
