2007 sees Country Life – the quintessentially English magazine – celebrate its 110th birthday.
Founded by Edward Hudson as Country Life Illustrated in 1897, the magazine has championed the look and feel of Old England – the rural world that even then was fast disappearing.
Country Life captured a vision that was shared by many people – not only the traditional landed caste, living on their estates, but also the aspiring professional classes.
In its 110 years, the magazine has boasted a number of distinguished and long-serving writers, whose dedication has preserved the magazine's reputation as the greatest and best known country magazine in the world.
One century and one decade on, Country Life has become a bastion of tradition and, where there were once many similar weekly magazines, it now stands alone. It continues to celebrate all that is great about the British way of life.
On a weekly basis Country Life offers its readers an eclectic mix of subjects ranging from architecture to gardens, from property through to fine arts and local markets. This combined with its superb photography means that Country Life is enjoyed by all who read it.
Editor-in-chief Mark Hedges, who was appointed in January 2006, says: “Country Life has been the champion and protector of the countryside and the people who live there for the last 110 years. We are proud to uphold its reputation for beautiful photography, authoritative writing and fierce campaigning well into the 21st century.”

THE COUNTRY LIFE SURVEY
1000 adults across the UK were asked, “Generally speaking, given the choice, would you say you would prefer to live in the town, or the countryside?”
65% of those questioned chose the countryside. In numerical terms this means 48 million of Britain's total population of 60 million would choose a rural life.
At present 12 million live in the countryside.
