CYCLING WEEKLY MOVES UP A GEAR WITH REDESIGN
February 27, 2006
IPC's Country & Leisure Media is unveiling a major redesign of its leading cycling title Cycling Weekly from its issue on sale March 2.
The 115 year-old title will introduce a raft of editorial and design changes, reflecting the increasing popularity of cycling and giving a broader offering to amateurs and enthusiasts alike.
Editorial changes include:
- New focus on health and fitness
- Improved technical sections with information in layered stages to suit all readers, from amateurs to pros
- A new regular riding section, listing places to visit and events to ride at with cut-out-and-keep maps for readers to take with them
- A new regular Q&A section, creating more interaction with readers
- Shorter, snappier news stories
- A new 60-second Interview at the back of each issue
Design changes include:
- A new masthead and new look cover reflecting the magazine's new focus on health and fitness with a modern and user-friendly format
- Box-outs packed with bite-size chunks of information, gossip and interviews, making the pages easier to dip in and out of and navigate
- Clearer typefaces with greater use of lower case, generating a less formal editorial tone
- Colour coding of the six key editorial sections - News, Health & Fitness, Technical, Q&A, Routes and Racing
- Bigger, brighter pictures with more non-racing images
Nigel Wynn,
Cycling Weekly deputy editor, says: Cycling has never been so popular so it's an ideal time for us to rethink the content we're offering. We've included plenty of health and fitness content, whilst keeping racing information. With such a long and respected history, we've been careful not to alienate older readers. With the new design, we've got something for everyone!
Keith Foster,
Cycling Weekly publishing director, adds: "Cycling is now a very popular way to keep fit generally and newcomers are increasingly looking for new challenges, help and advice from magazines such as
Cycling Weekly. Cycling appeals to both sexes. It's a healthy pursuit and one of very few physical activities that can be taken up by pretty much anyone, regardless of age. The challenge for our editorial team was to create new content which appealed to this new audience whilst also continuing to satisfy our existing readership. I think they have successfully achieved that."
The new look
Cycling Weekly goes on sale Thursday March 2 with a new cover price up 15 pence to £2.35.
