NME EDITOR SCOOPS TOP MAGAZINE ACCOLADE

May 5, 2005

Conor McNicholas NME editor Conor McNicholas has walked away with the top editor's prize at the annual magazine 'Oscars', the Periodical Publishers Association Editorial and Publishing Excellence Awards.

The awards, judged by a panel of industry experts, reward the very highest calibre of talent and achievement across magazine publishing in the UK, and were hosted at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Wednesday, 5 May.

Conor picked up the Consumer Editor of the Year Award despite stiff competition from the cream of British editors, including Nuts editor Phil Hilton, Closer editor Jane Johnson and Woman & Home editor Sue James.

The judges said Conor took the honours for his success in “overhauling a 51 year-old title to make it relevant to a new generation of music lovers.” They also praised his personal commitment to the brand's commercial success, adding: “This editor is so much a part of the product - he is on every page. His enthusiasm, knowledge, speed of reaction and drive have given an established title new life. Thanks to his innovations, NME is now thriving in a tough market and delivering week in, week out.”

One member of the panel added: “He makes me want to go and buy the magazine. It has the 'wow' factor.”

Conor said: “I'm flabbergasted but tremendously pleased. This really is a victory for the whole team around NME. The judges mentioned NME's speed of response and that's something you can only achieve by everyone working together. It's fantastic that we are winning awards for the work we've done over the last 12 months, but the future looks even better. As Karen Carpenter sang, 'We've only just begun...'.”

NME
publishing director Eric Fuller added: “Conor does a brilliant job of keeping NME on top of its game, always coming up with new ideas, hunting out new talent and making sure his magazine stays box-fresh. I'm delighted with his win, which is thoroughly deserved.”
