Expert advice on how to jump ditches from top riders and trainers

"Ditches are effectively spreads – you need a good deal of impulsion in order to jump them correctly. However, if your horse is inexperienced with these fences, it's important not to let them rush on the approach. Don't let the horse look down into the ditch, and the same goes for you – look up and ahead."
Lucy Thompson

"When you have a ditch before, under, or after a fence, focus on the top line of the obstacle, not the ditch. On the approach to a ditch, keep the horse in front of your leg and maintain a good rhythm."
Chris King

"A narrow ditch with a set of wings makes the ideal introduction for a younger or novice horse. On your approach, sit up and keep your leg on."
Austin O'Connor

"If your horse doesn't like ditches, find a small one and get a lead from a more experienced horse. Keep practising until it becomes boring and your horse has lost his fear of the ditch."
Blyth Tait

"Never look down at the ditch on approach, or while you are jumping it. Horses don't know the ditch is there until the last minute, so you just have to ride positively forward and look into the horizon."
Laura Toogood
